SCHOOLS COURSES

Pacific Medicare is NZQA accredited for unit standard assessment and founding director Dennis Mundy has had extensive experience in the emergency care field and over 15 years as a secondary school teacher. All Pacific Medicare trainers have an educational focus vs instructional delivery and are industry qualified with practical experience in many emergency care areas. Our courses are designed specifically for the school environment with lots of practical, hands-on elements.

The core difference is the background training and skills of Pacific Medicare trainers. All trainers have significant education delivery backgrounds – they are teachers vs. trainers. All staff are able to manage groups of diverse individuals and cultures respectfully, with sensitivity, and identify areas where assistance is required through interaction and observation. Identifying cultural or religious norms and customs is part of the briefing process for any course. We can also teach realistic class sizes instead of just 12-16 at a time.

As with any service delivery in our field, it has to come down to quality. We are very client-focused. Courses need to be relevant, practical and fun.

Student courses:

Pacific Medicare offers two first aid courses for students :

  • Basic first aid: Covering US 26551,26552 (or 6401,6402)
  • Workplace first aid – Covering US 6400, 6401, 6402 or 26551, 26552 + 6400.

This course not only prepares students for employment where first aid certification is required, but can also be the first step on a career path within the first aid and emergency care industry

Teacher courses:

First aid and refresher courses for teachers are also provided, with a strong emphasis on training for EOTC and other outdoor activities, including sport. We can work with a school to take a strategic approach to selecting staff to be trained in first aid.

First aid and health and safety are often only thought about after an accident happens, resulting in negative connotations around it. If the first aid issue was addressed beforehand, there would be a more strategic focus, and the school could match relevant staff for different roles both inside and outside the classroom.

We can offer 1, 2 day and refresher first aid courses for teachers, support staff, prefects, sports coaches and parent volunteers.

In addition we make it easy

  • Flexibility for training – including after hours options
  • Training on site at the school
  • All equipment. Training manuals, powerpoints, manikins provided

NZQA unit standards that can be assessed – 6400, 6401, 6402 or 26551, 26552, 6400 (please advise at time of inquiry or registration).

Our 2 day outdoor course has been designed specifically for those that work in an outdoor or exposed environment (perfect for field trips) – particularly where first aid support may take longer to arrive ie: bush/ forest/ parks/ beach areas/ remote locations. Where extended or overnight periods include such environments.

The focus is on providing first aid and extended care to patients in remote areas until specialist help arrives. You still cover all the key topics covered in the standard 2 day course and you get to see and work through how you apply these to a ‘real’ environment in the outdoors – using what you have at hand. Participants are expected to fully participate in scenarios with equipment in outdoor locations irrespective of weather conditions – this is as real as it gets – so wear and bring appropriate clothing.
